Description: The Street Car R.P.O. Service in Cincinnati and Clevelandby Kenneth T. Stewartandin Rochesterby Douglas N. Clark Mobile Post Office Society, 1986 Streetcar RPOs were meant to improve the speed and accuracy of mail handling by sorting and postmarking mail while in transit. They represented a real improvement in service in their time, but eventually were replaced by trucks as vehicles and roads improved in the early 20th century. These special trolleys collected, moved, sorted, and cancelled mail along their routes through the city. Many had slots where mail could be deposited on the street. The monographs contain historic photographs, maps, station routes, cancellations, trivia and bibliographies. They are a fascinating, in depth look at microcosms of the Post Office.
