Description: Strategic Air Command by Mel Hunter 1961 1st Edition Hardcover w/DJ Illustrated Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1961. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Mel Hunter (Photographer). 192 pages. 230 photographs. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10.5 inches. One of Hunter's best-known books is "The Missilemen", a photo illustrated work published in 1960 by Doubleday. Hunter visited U.S. rocket and missile sites during the late 1950s; he took all of the book's black-and-white photographs. It was a rare look inside the world of rocket scientists and engineers of the early space age. Another Hunter book, "Strategic Air Command", received the Aviation Writers' Association highest honors in 1961. "Mel launched a career in scientific illustration after he was an established illustrator," said Smith-Hunter. "He was very accurate and was commissioned to complete 26 paintings of celestial objects for the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. His final wish was to launch his cremated remains into space. A launch, coordinated by Space Services Inc. was successful. Derived from a Kirkus review: A profusely illustrated look at the Strategic Air Command, its personnel, airplanes and missiles. Uncritical, slick and dramatized as it is, the book will nevertheless interest persons seeking a quick eye-opening glimpse of the hardware that serves as America's nuclear protection. Examined are the 10-engine B-36, the B-47 and the B-52, the 100 mils an hour B-58, and the Atlas, Titan and Minuteman missiles; the KC-97 and KC-1 serial tankers (including a play by play account of a mid-air refueling). He also examines such devices as the Hound Dog air-to-ground nuclear missile which can be fired out 500 miles ahead of the B-52 to blast a path of destruction and the Quail, a small electronic drone's B-52 can release to fool enemy radar into thinking there are two bombers where only one exists. In the short text, the author gives full, undiluted credit to SAC for long ago having saved the U.S. from atomic destruction. ***Ships well packed via USPS media mail****
