Description: I don't know how this Gon mask represents a gorilla but it apparently does. Pretty abstract! The double appendage under its chin might more be called a trunk. But no. It is a tall mask fashioned with rather crude carving. The forehead is divided into three large triangular sections over a glowering countenance. The middle one is painted red and the flanking ones are kaolin white. There may be an exposed insect tunnel on the right side, no longer inhabited. The central triangle and eye sockets are edged with rows of drill holes. Below its stumpy nose a long curving extension has twin perpendicular shapes like dangling bananas, also painted red. Both of these cantilevered (whatever they are?) had broken off at some point but were skillfully reattached. This is an unusual and somewhat bizarre work of art! It is quite old. It 's about 16" in height. It really is striking and will look great mounted on a wall. U.S. buyers, please. [Boston Primitive]
