Description: This beautiful Sterling silver visiting card case is hallmarked in Birmingham, 1867. Today, a visiting card contains the individual’s name, address, mobile number, email address, and website. Years ago, the visiting card might only include the name to announce the visiting person. According to experts, the 19th century (the Victorian period) was the golden age of visiting card cases. The case you are looking at is Victorian and hand-engraved in Birmingham in 1867. Visiting card cases were made of various materials, including ivory, mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, papier-mache, wood, leather, and metals, including sterling silver in this case. Visiting cases made in Birmingham were considered of the highest quality. Solid craftsmanship and advanced welding of the period produced high-quality products. This silver visiting card case is embossed in high relief. The letter B is engraved in the central cartouche. The hinged lid shows the hallmarks. The hallmarks include the Queen's head, on which, when she became queen, the duty mark was turned to face left, as seen in the first hallmark. Following the duty mark is the lion for the silver mark, followed by the anchor for the city of Birmingham, and the capital letter S for the year. At the far right are two letters for the maker. I can make out the second letter as an M. The case measures 2 13/16 inches wide, and 3 7/8 inches tall. The case is 1/4 inch thick. The visiting card case is in very good condition.
