Description: (C6) Rare Collectible Antique Sterling Silver Souvenir Spoon. Please review all photos as they best describe the item as well as its Condition visually. Shepard Mfg. Co. "Tuna" spoon featuring a figural tuna and Sugarloaf, with Shepard's "Type 1" Avalon scene embossed bowl. Between about 1903 and 1923 Shepard produced a number of spoons specifically designed for Catalina tourists. This "Tuna" spoon is one of their tw0 earliest Catalina designs. Only the obverse is decorated with Catalina themes, a tuna and Sugarloaf Rock. The reverse is undecorated save for some decorative flourishes and scrollwork along the edges of the spoon. Following the 1898 founding of the Tuna Club in Avalon, with its goal of ethical and rules based sport fishing, Catalina became a Mecca for big game fishing, spurring tourism. It is not surprising that almost every silversmithing firm's earliest Catalina spoon, those designed well before 1910, featured a tuna in some form, often figural. These firms included Gorham (1903), J. Mayer & Bros. (ca. 1905) (see 9/14/19 and 3/7/21 [#6] posts), Paye & Baker (pre mid-1903), Shepard (ca. 1903-04?) and Watson (ca. 1902-03?).
