Privately trained by painter and animal etcher Peter Moran, Parrish was best known for his landscape etching of "Eastern North America, particularly the harbors and villages of New England and Canada," and as the father of legendary American painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish.Parrish was engaged in mercantile pursuits until he was 30, when he applied himself to art, studying for a year with a local teacher. He decided to become an artist after a European tour in 1867. After his 1869 marriage and a soon to be family, Parrish opened a stationary store to support his family and painted as a hobby. He sold the store in 1877 and in 1878, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia, and a year later at the National Academy in New York City. He soon turned his attention also to etching, and in December 1879, produced his first plate. From 1885-1886 the family toured Europe for the artist to find inspiration. The family moved to New Hampshire when they returned. From 1893 fir a decade, he built his new home and landscaped, returning to art in 1903. His wife left him in 1905 and he continued to paint and make copper plates until a stoke ended his career in 1929. His works were exhibited in museums and salons in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, London, Liverpool, Paris, Munich Dresden and Vienna. We are delighted to combine items for one shipping fee.
