It was published by John Lane, The Bodley Head, of London, in MCMXVII (1917) and is the tenth edition. Canadian author, Stephen Leacock’s early 20th century reputation as a humourist and political economist was not limited to the borders of Canada, but spread around the world. Between the years 1915 and 1925, he was the best-known English-speaking humourist in the world. His reputation withstood the test of time, his kindly jokes still evoking laughter today. Literary Lapses was a collection of 42 of the best of Stephen Leacock’s humerous articles previously published in US and Canadian magazines. In 1910, he privately published this book, which was spotted by a British publisher, John Lane, who brought out editions in London and New York, assuring Leacock's future as a writer. The book measures 7.75 inches x 5.5 inches and has 248 pages, which are rough hand-cut to the side and bottom rims. The book is in good, neat condition for its age, the pages are browned/faded with age, with wear/bumps and is grubby/faded/blemished to the original cloth hardback cover, with a previous owner’s signature at the front and no other ink or pencil markings in the book. The binding is good with no loose or missing pages. There is no dust-jacket. A wonderful vintage edition.
