Description: Normal.dotm 0 0 1 1279 7292 Lincoln Public Schools 60 14 8955 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false King, Stephen. NIGHT SHIFT. Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1978. 1st edition. With "FIRST EDITION" printed on the copyright page and with code S52 in the gutter of page 336, both of which indicate that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing of this book. This is NOT a book club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: there were a number of later printings of NIGHT SHIFT that were published in this exact hardcover format, in similar hardcover formats, and there were some book club editions that resemble the trade edition. There were only 12,000 1st edition, 1st printing copies of NIGHT SHIFT (Stephen King's very scarce 4th book; offered here) that were published with the correct dust jacket with the publisher's price of $8.95 on the front flap and with the correct gutter code of S52. Newer Stephen King books are published in 1st editions of over a million copies, which makes the 12,000 1st edition copies of NIGHT SHIFT very scarce. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing. SCROLL DOWN THIS PAGE IMMEDIATELY TO SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK AND THIS DUST JACKET. He is the logical successor to Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft. And, he is also one of the greatest of all modern fiction writers, regardless of genre From the dust jacket: “ . . . NIGHT SHIFT . . . STEPHEN KING . . . This new book of stories from the author of CARRIE, THE SHINING, and ‘SALEM’S LOT is a chilling collection of strange imaginings, ghoulish twists, and diabolical terror . . . Stephen King, a modern master of the macabre, has brought together nineteen of his most unsettling short pieces — bizarre tales of dark doings and unthinkable acts from the twilight regions where horror and madness take on eerie, unearthly forms . . . where noises in the walls and shadows by the bed are always signs of something dreadful on the prowl . . . The settings are familiar and unsuspected — a high school, a factory, a truck stop, a laundry, a field of Nebraska corn. But in Stephen King’s world any place can serve as devil’s ground . . . if the time of night is propitious and the forces of darkness are strong, and the victims are caught just slightly off their guard . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . STEPHEN KING’S first novel, CARRIE, has sold close to two million copies in seven languages, and served as the basis for Brian DePalma’s enormously successful film of the same name. His next two novels, ‘SALEM’S LOT and THE SHINING — both bestsellers — have also been sold to the movies . . . ” From the rear panel of the dust jacket: “In the ominous, frightening world of Stephen King there are things unimagined, almost unspeakable, working the NIGHT SHIFT: o Strange presences in Jerusalem’s Lot, a town abandoned for generations — and with good reason. No one who wanders there now, after the sun has set, ever comes back alive . . . o And the hideous growths on the hands of a former astronaut — tiny round and yellow eyes popping through the skin, watching him, not like what they see . . . o And the mysterious little girl lost in a fierce Maine blizzard, calling out to her rescuers in a pitiful voice. But she walks on top of the deep, drifting snow — and she leaves no tracks o And the grim-faced children in a Midwest town where no one seems to live past the age of nineteen . . . o And the vermin in the second sub-cellar of the old mill — abandoned to darkness for a hundred years and now assuming shapes and sizes nature never intended them to take . . . o And the giant folding and steam pressing machine in the Blue Ribbon Laundry — an impressive and reliable piece of equipment, until it got its first taste of human blood . . . “ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Clute, Nicholls THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION (1993): “ . . . Stephen King is probably the most successful bestseller novelist in history . . . King’s pungent prose, his sharp ear for dialogue, his disarmingly laid-back, frank style, along with his passionately fierce denunciations of human stupidity and cruelty (especially to children), put him among the more distinguished of ‘popular’ writers . . . “ Jones, Newman HORROR: THE 100 BEST BOOKS (1988): “ . . . Stephen King is arguably the most popular novelist in the history of American fiction and is indisputably the most successful horror writer of all time, with hundreds of millions of copies of his books in print . . . “ Barron HORROR LITERATURE (1990): “ . . . A discussion of Stephen King must be a dominant consideration in any analysis of contemporary dark fantasy . . . The essence of successful storytelling is solid plotting and the structural principles of King’s plots are remarkably effective. His characters are believable, sympathetic, and thoroughly contemporary; his settings are realistic, his dialogue colloquial, his writing clear and vivid . . . In order for a horror novel to achieve best-seller status, it must touch subjects, themes, and attitudes of more general public concern than is usual in hardcore genre products, while also exploiting the characteristic appeal of the genre. Stephen King has done this more efficiently and consistently than any other horror writer, past or present . . . “ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A NEAR FINE (or slightly better) book in a VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and red boards binding with bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The book has, essentially, no flaws. The corners are not bumped, the edges of the boards are not worn, and the book has no spine lean; all unusual thus. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st state price of $8.95 on the upper front flap. The dust jacket has some color touch-up on the reverse side, mainly at the head and heel of the spine panel. There is also a bit of color touch-up on the outside of the dust jacket, mainly at the upper and lower edges of the spine panel; largely unobtrusive. The color touch-up was accomplished by a professional paper conservationist using archival (non-acidic) materials. There is a small closed tear at the lower edge of the rear panel of the dust jacket. The famous dust jacket design is by Fred Marcellino. Overall, this is a nice copy of a 1st edition of NIGHT SHIFT in the correct 1st state dust jacket, especially when one considers the scarcity of 1st editions of NIGHT SHIFT. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN HORROR FICTION 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD-WINNING 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF STEPHEN KING 1st EDITIONS! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles.
