Choose from titles such as Carrie, along with various other titles from their respective series. These paperback books are in English and feature genres including crime, thriller, and mystery. The original language is also English, making it easy to get lost in the suspenseful storylines. Perfect for anyone looking to build their collection of thrilling reads. cdm–Some notes on book collectingTL;DNR is a relatively new shortcut to understanding a modern phenomenon – many or most people have short attention spans. It becomes a joke when the N is left off – indicating that it is comical when you actually take the time to read a long article – or in this case – a long Ebay description. If for whatever reason you don’t have the time or stamina to read long articles or descriptions – just stop here – but if you are interested in some tips and info on book collecting – read on.Understanding the Ebay search app.For some strange reason the search engine initially searches only the title of the Ebay offering – but after the first search – on a computer – a check box appears making further searches of the title and description possible. We create our book offerings using ‘variable listing’ which creates a pull down list for the books. It allows us to offer many books in the same offering but the list allows only a small amount of text for each item listed. Note that the search engine will not search the pull down list. Because of this limitation we put the entire list of the offered items in the description. In the case of a list of books — the entire name of the book and its author(s) can be listed. So with this bit of info in mind – to find a specific book title you may need to do the search twice – with the description box checked on the second search. You should also like to know what a book one of our listings is worth – we have a method for that also. Two devices will be necessary for this method – it can be two cell phones or a phone and a computer. Just open our listing and get to the book you are interested in and display the cover on one of the devices. Use the Ebay app on a cell phone and click on the camera icon. A kind of target will appear – center it on the picture of the book cover and take a pic. The Ebay app will then open up other listings of this book along with their prices. Note that this camera app will not find info in the descriptions or item list either and apparently just does optical character recognition of the text in the pic and searches the titles. Note also that it usually finds books that are listed as one book offerings – books in lots or multiple offerings such as ours will not be found. Odd text may not be recognized and I suspect some strange cover designs will also confuse the app. Some of our books will not find a match – which may indicate that there are no current listings of the book – meaning that the book may be rare or valuable. Note that ‘active’ listings are usually higher than the same item in ‘completed’ listings as the sellers are trying to get what they ‘think’ the item is worth. Their valuation may be wrong and it takes all kinds to make a world. Check out ‘Dunning-Kruger effect’ on YouTube to understand the phenomenon.Note also that a book usually costs $4 or so to ship and you must add the book price and its shipping cost in the listing – or if free shipping is offered you should realize the book and shipping is combined. We offer combined shipping on our books and depending on the weight of the books – multiple purchased books will add a dollar or so to the single book cost for each additional book purchased.Checking on book values can be done by clicking on the ‘advanced’ link on the computer version of the ebay search and searching again with completed items checked. This will give you ‘sold’ listings for the item you are searching on – but again this is limited to single item listings and is also time limited in that the search is only for the last 90 days of Ebay sales. Note that on any item there will be ‘auction’ sales and most experienced sellers will have found that many items go for a very low bid which does not reflect the true value of the book. Who has the time to find auction items which are only up for one week? – TL;DNR applies here – if the serious buyers are not seeing the item then it goes for peanuts. You will see no auctions on our Ebay store. A more scholarly method to find book values is to use Google search which will find the book on Amazon or some of the other online bookstores such as AbeBooks or Biblio.com. These sites have their own search engines you can use. For the pinnacle of book value sites you can subscribe to Worthpoint which somehow tracks collectible items sold on Ebay and other sites and will give you the real value of the item or book.First editions – I suspect a good percentage of our books are first editions but that does not mean they are rare. Rare and valuable first editions are usually hard back (and even leather bound) and the rarity is in the limited number of copies printed in the ‘first’ edition. A first edition of what is commonly called a ‘mass market’ paperback can be quite a few books – meaning the book is ‘first edition’ but not rare. Also note that paperbacks are usually a secondary printing with the first editions coming out in hardback – there can be a first edition of the paperback. Read the page at the front of the book which will usually list the publishing history. For me some of the book covers are a work of art – they were produced for the cover from an actual painting commissioned to an accomplished artist. Do a search on ‘famous book cover artists’ and note some of the names. Some of the more collectible books I will be offering can be collected on the basis of the cover artist – there are numerous databases such as ‘isfdb.org/’ – for Science Fiction and Fantasy books.Six of the Greatest Science Fiction Cover Artists of All TimeRichard M. Powers. The Picasso of Sci-fi Art. ...Chris Foss. The Pioneer of Futuristic Visions. ...H.R. Giger. The Mind Behind the Xenomorph. ...Boris Vallejo. The Fantastical Realist. ...Kelly Freas. The Golden Age Gem. ...John Berkey. The Cosmic Visionary.Do an image search on any of these artists and note many of the images are of book covers. Do a search on the ISFDB database and you will find huge lists of the book covers these artists have created. You may have noticed that most book covers currently published have just large block letters created with a word processor – not hand created text by an artist – and instead of a beautiful painting there is some photoshop image with whatever now passes as an artistic flair such as sepia colors or some type of fading. Check out this web page 'bookriot.com/book-sizes /' – note the pic at the top of the first page – all of those books have photo shopped and word processor created covers. Note the sizes listed in the article and why they are paperback – only books expected to sell well are made in hardback these days – they say as many as half the produced books do not sell and go back to the publisher. What I collected in the 60 years I have been accumulating books – is mostly those with the artistic covers and in the vintage sizes. The original paperback books were shorter in height than those printed later and are easily spotted as vintage. Many of the older books had the page edges dyed red or green – this is another item to consider.Book sizes and coverings are other items to consider in collecting. The original paperback books were produced by Pocketbooks and even had unique serial numbers – I have a few of them in my collection and they will eventually be offered up on our Ebay store. Some series were intended for reading by our overseas military during WWII and are so indicated on the covers. Some publishers have a numbering system for their vintage books – Ace books for example – you could collect the entire series by the numbers. I have one book that appears to have been well read and the binding destroyed – a craftsman drilled tiny holes along the spine and made a sewed binding – I suspect this occurred on an old navy ship with a machine shop? Many have been put in wraps (a cellophane wrapping of the entire cover and back ‘wrapped’. Some were done by schools and used book stores and others were produced with a noticeable thin cellophane layer by the publisher. You could collect based on any of these criteria but finding them may be difficult. The spine design is sometimes unique and very striking – with a small pic or a colorful design for the entire series. One of my favorites is the DAWsf yellow spine design – I found them irresistible and many are in my collection.Look up Laser Books and you will find a highly collectible set of science fiction books produced for a short time by Harlequin books. Note: Laser Books was a short-lived (1975-1977) paperback SF imprint of Canadian publisher Harlequin Books. All the covers were painted by Kelly Freas, ISBN Prefix 037372, as they were all SF books, and numbered sequentially.Notice the prices usually printed on the book covers – they indicate the era that edition of the book was published – many of my books have a 35 cent price reflecting the cost of paperbacks in the 1960s. The price has gone up steadily since then and many now are around $10 or more for a paperback. Another issue to consider for collecting is ‘embossed’ covers – those with the book title and other artifacts physically raised up on the covers by some type of textured press – they are not very common and are usually only on some of the newer books. One rare type of cover is one where the entire front, back, and spine are one commissioned work of art and the cover is kind of a landscape encompassing the entire book and spine – pretty impressive. Many of my books do not have ISBN numbers – ISBN numbers were introduced in 1970. Any book printed before 1970 will not have an assigned ISBN – but reprintings after 1970 will probably have them.
