His wife rescued most of it and the fragment was later bought for the Library of Harvard University. The draft which begins at page 350 of the original, is extremely valuable to all students of the work of James Joyce. It differs very considerably from the final published version, and includes characters and incidents which were later cut for the sake of compression. The present edition has been carefully edited with footnotes and prepared for the press by Dr. Theodore Spencer in such a way as to show Joyce's queries, deletions, and alternative ideas." This text of Stephen Hero was probably written between 1904 and 1906.
