ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is a Beautiful & Mega-Ultra-Rare Vintage Mid-Century Circa 1950s Religious/Inspirational Heliogravure Lithograph Depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child Surrounded by Cherubs titled, “Maria im Rosenhag” (AKA “Madonna of the Rose Garden”, “Virgin in the Rose Bower” or “Madonna of the Rose Bower”), after the original finely-detailed & small (50.5 x 40cm) c1440-1442 oil & tempera on panel painting by the world-famous listed 15th century “Soft Style” International Gothic painter, ‘Stéfan Lochner’ (German, c.1400-c.1453)—who is sometimes listed as Stéphan Lothner, Stéphen Lothner, Stéphan Lochner, Stéffan Lochner, also Löchner and even Loechner. Lochner’s original is in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne. Brief Info About the Artist: Stéfan Lochner (German, c.1400-c.1453) was born in the region of Meersburg on the shores of Lake Constance c.1400 (others sources state c.1410), and some sources say he died in Cologne in 1451 (the same year as his parents deaths) when there was an outbreak of widespread plague running rampant that year, though others doubt that date and put his death after about 1453. He stated to have been a pupil of the Wilhelm Meister of Cologne, and he was usually called Etienne de Cologne or Master Stéphan by his pupils and is considered by some to be the most important painter of the 15th century and was also called the, “Master of the Dombild” (“Master of Cathedral Painting”). He also never signed any of his paintings and his identity was not established until the 19th century. “A document of 16 August 1451 implies that an artist called Stefan Lochner came from Meersburg, Lake Constance. This artist was recorded in Cologne from 1442; he was elected town councillor by the painters' guild in 1447 and in 1450 and references to him cease at the end of 1451, a year in which plague broke out in Cologne. There are no pictures signed by Lochner, but it was assumed from the note in his diary that Albrecht Dürer saw the 'Adoration of the Magi' in the Rathaus chapel in 1520 (now in Cologne Cathedral) and that it was painted by 'maister Steffan zu Cöln'. It is now thought that this artist is not necessarily the one who died in 1451, because the painter of the 'Adoration' has been plausibly associated with a Book of Hours in Darmstadt dated 1453, and is considered to have come from the Cologne area, rather than Lake Constance. Other paintings attributed to Lochner on the basis of the 'Adoration of the Magi' include: the 'Madonna in the Rose Garden' (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum); 'the Presentation in the Temple', dated 1445 (Lisbon, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian); 'the Presentation in the Temple', dated 1447 (Darmstadt, Hessisches Landesmuseum); ‘Madonna of the Rose Bower’ (Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum); And two wings with saints from an altarpiece which has been dated from dendrochronological evidence to 1454 (London, National Gallery and Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz Museum).” (Source: Britishmuseum) About the Painting: The Madonna of the Rose Bower (or Virgin in the Rose Bower) is a panel painting by the German artist Stefan Lochner, usually dated c. 1440–1442, although some art historians believe it contemporaneous with his later Dombild Altarpiece. It is usually seen as one of his finest and most closely detailed works. Madonna of the Rose Garden is one of three ‘Virgin of Humility’ style paintings that Lochner created. The Virgin is presented as “Queen of Heaven”, and is seated in a rose garden, symbolizing the heavenly Eden, under a canopy with red curtains held apart by angels. She sits on a red cut velvet bolster, holding the Christ child in her lap. Her crown and medallion are symbols of her virginity. She wears a minutely detailed brooch, which contains a representation of a seated maiden holding a unicorn. Christ holds an apple, a symbol to signify him as the New Adam. Hovering and seated angels offer gifts of roses and apples or play music. Five kneel in the grass before her, with instruments including a portable organ, others bear fruit. The painting is heavily infused with symbols of innocence and purity, including the red and white roses. The red roses and strawberries, by their red color, reference Christ's forthcoming Passion. Mary sits before a curved stone bench, around which grow lilies, daisies and strawberries, with an acanthus flower blooming to her left. Mary herself is presented on a monumental scale, underscoring her regal status. Above her is pictured God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, together with God made Flesh sitting on her lap, Lochner has pictured the dogma of the Trinity. This arrangement of God above her also reinforces Mary’s divine motherhood. (Source: Wikipedia) Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s copyright, name & location, ‘Copyright by Die Piperdrucke Verlags-G.m.b.H München’, appears printed lower-left in the bottom outer margin just beneath the image and the artist’s name and title, ‘Lochner, Maria im Rosenhag’, appears lower-right respectively. This heliogravure litho of “Madonna in the Rose Garden” (AKA “Madonna of the Rose Garden”) was published in collaboration with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and is also often referred to with the title, “Madonna of the Rose Bower”. The printing info, ‘Printed in Germany’, appears lower-right in the bottom outer margin corner. The Litho has incorporated gold & copper-colored metallic inks for much of the image, especially in the background of the piece to mimic & resemble Lochner’s original painting which had oil paint mixed with ‘gold ground’, but the printing inks give it a more subdued sheen to it rather than a shinier & more-reflective gold effect, like Lockner’s original painting has—still cool though and sets off the image beautifully. Circa the 1950s, the Litho was being sold by the publisher for 42 Deutch Marks which equaled about $4.20 USD—which in today’s dollar for 2024 equates to about $50- average (+or-). The Litho is on a nice ivory-colored medium-heavier weight wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size with wide margins is 24-3/16” x 19-5/8”, Image size is 18-5/8” x 14-5/8”. The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade and wonderful stunning details & tones! This Litho has been tucked away in one of our archive drawers amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No tears! No real or significant damage at all on this gorgeous print, aside from a few negligible & tiny issues to include: Ultra-minimal (only a few) very tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on in the outer margin areas which are hardly visible and not even really worth mentioning (none noticeable in image area); Ultra-minimal (only a handful) of very slight & very tiny crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area which aren’t even noticeable except very lightly from behind and aren’t worth mentioning; Other extremely minimal creases scattered here & there in the outer margins, along a couple outer margin edges and a few outer margin corners with associated tiny dog-ear bends too—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible/no real toning of the paper stock from age noticeable, especially amidst the ivory-color of the paper stock itself and also isn’t worth mentioning either. This vintage mid-century print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
