George McClain was active in the US civil rights movement and an instrumental figure in bringing about racial harmony to New York City. He was a regular companion of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights protests of the early 1960s. Along with Rev. James Lawson, McClain helped organize the original Nashville sit-ins, which were part of a non-violent direct action campaign to end racial segregation at lunch counters in downtown Nashville, Tennessee.
