Nominated by President Garfield in 1881 and re-nominated by President Arthur after Garfield's assassination, Thomas Stanley Matthews (1824-1889) was confirmed as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by the narrowest margin in history (24-23). A former Ohio judge and legislator, who had also completed an unexpired term in the US Senate (1877-1881), Matthews served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court until his death in 1889.
