Description: Child's Transferware Miniature Toy Plate RED WILLOW Edge & Malkin Staffordshire c 1870 This fantastic miniature dish is a stunning and scarce transferware toy, circa 1870. Originally part of a complete miniature children's dinner service, it measures just 3-1/8 inches in diameter. Transfer printed in red, the piece is finished with pearlware glaze. It is decorated in a variation on the Willow pattern, an uncommon interpretation of the original Chinese blue willow wares, much less commonly found in red willow. The plate has a pair of love birds at the top, with three men on a bridge, a boat and willow trees to the left and a Japanese pagoda and flowering trees on the right. A very strong example of a fine pattern. The plate is marked the initials of the maker, E.M., signifying Edge Malkin & Co., a 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England. The pattern is discussed in Doris Lechler's English Toy China as well as Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the UK and US. The is in great condition with no chips cracks or repairs. Stilt marks on the front and back insignificant kiln dust on the reverse side and glaze ponding on front, original to the making. No noteworthy wear, finely potted. Children's transferware of this quality is quite scarce and highly sought after. This is the last piece we have in this desirable pattern.
