Description: Brown Aesthetic Transferware Child's Creamer Milk Jug LITTLE MAY WITH APRONFUL OF EGGS Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c1890 This antique child's transferware cream pitcher or milk jug, circa 1890, was originally part of a complete children's tea set or doll's set. The octagonal pitcher stands about 3-3/8 inches tall . The decoration is transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown or sepia. The jug depicts a homely little girl named May or Mae standing in front of farmhouse wearing a dress, a floppy hat, and an apron. She is holding up the front of her apron which appears to be filled with eggs. An endearing naïve scene of country life. One of May's socks is falling down and she has a subtle smile on her have! The central image repeats on each side of the jug, framed by an aesthetic background of flowers and a floral leaf border. The pitcher was made by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The official pattern name is "MAY". It is unmarked; associated with Allerton's pattern number 753. The influence of the Aesthetic movement on the pattern design captures the Victorian love of nature and the exotic. The piece is in great condition, with no chips cracks or repairs. Haphazardly made, for child’s play, with typical minor manufacturing imperfections, original to the making. Slight patina consistent with age and prior use. Not fine pottery and not intended to be. The jug displays beautifully. A great example of naive and whimsical early wares!Sold as is. Children's aesthetic transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers and farm and veterinary folks love it! A perfect gift for a doll collector or that special farm girl! We have listed companion wares showing the same little girl with her pet cat and dog and another showing the same girl with her arms around a big Newfoundland dog, along with other winsome childrens transferwares this week.
