About the artist: PATRICK SART The prolific talent of American abstract expressionist painter, Patrick Sart, born Patrick Shields, 1948, Hollywood, California, spans almost 6 decades and embraces a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography, sculpture, ceramics, video and performance art. In addition, Patrick has three published books showcasing his art and poetry. In 1970, Patrick received a BFA in Pictorial Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles with a focus on portrait, architecture and social realism studies. Patrick participated in avant-garde happenings with the cutting-edge UCLA faculty which included his mentor, the renowned 20th Century Master Richard Diebenkorn, one of the great Post-War painters of California abstract expressionism. Patrick was the star student of Diebenkorn, receiving an education that included private tours of distinguished art collections like the Sidney Brody mansion in Holmby Hills and Diebenkorn’s own one man show at LACMA. Diebenkorn deeply admired Patrick’s sense of color and palettes and Patrick kept in touch after his graduation, visiting the painter at his famed Ocean Park studio in Santa Monica in the 1970’s. Patrick’s interest in art was ignited as a young teenager in the 1960's when he was introduced to oil painting while attending an apprentice program in Abstract Expressionism at the La Jolla Art Museum, now known as the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, California. After graduation from UCLA, some of his first jobs included painting needlepoint designs for Hungarian Countess Ci Ci Zoltowska and showgirl costume designs for the MGM Grand Zeigfeld Follies Theatre for John Harkrider, personal protégé of Flo Zeigfeld. Patrick’s creations opened The Ziegfeld Room at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1975. By 1987, Patrick had crossed the Pacific Ocean to land a solo retrospective of his mixed media paintings at the Galerie Altana in Hamburg, Germany. Upon his homecoming to the USA in 1988, he was featured at MoBo Art Gallery in Santa Monica, California in three back to back theme exhibits that showcased his use of social realism. For the next decade, Patrick was also represented by the world-renowned art collector and owner of L’Ermitage “Grand Classe” hotels of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, California, Arnold Ashkenazy. Ashkenazy commissioned Patrick to create a multitude of paintings, prints, and sculptures for his hotels, with a suite at the Mondrian named after the artist. In 1995, an interest in old and fading architecture led Patrick to plant roots in New Orleans, Louisiana, purchasing a large warehouse to serve as a venue for exhibitions, art happenings, and a studio for production of ceramics. By 2003, Patrick had made prints of his iconic watercolor painting titled, “Street Jazz,” commemorating 100 years of the birthplace of jazz in New Orleans. In 2003, Patrick began signing his work Sart, as an expression of his interest in the existentialist thinker, Jean Paul Sartre while living from 1990-1993 in the great French capital, Paris. This transition melded perfectly with his life-long interest in the power and beauty of art to transcend borders and cultures. Now an internationally recognized artist, Patrick Sart, is also known as the “Painter of Bygone Times” and is delighted to offer a selection of Original Paintings and Limited Editions Prints created by Patrick during his last visit to Maui in the summer of 2012. Patrick captured the effervescent greens and blues of the hot sundrenched shores and endless fields of sugar cane, but with a nostalgic twist. Through research and his imagination, he painted how the island of yesteryear might have looked 150 years ago, from quaint harbors and flower jungles to the dazzling, lava-framed beaches. Like the great Impressionist Paul Gauguin, Patrick’s travels and love for Polynesia and the South Seas, have taken him to Tahiti, the Marquesas Islands and very often to the Hawaiian Islands as he says, "I've been visiting the islands on and off for over thirty years and each time I return, it’s like coming home.” Patrick currently resides in New Orleans and spends his days painting from dawn to dusk at his Royal Street art studio in the French Quarter. He says his latest work is still inspired by the strong sense of color passed on to him by his mentor and friend, Richard Diebenkorn. Patrick's favorite quote: "Art is above it all!"
