Description: lot of (3) different postcards by Max Stein showing the aftermath of the steamship SS Eastland disaster Bio - The SS Eastland was hired to carry employees of Western Electric from Chicago to Michigan City Indiana for their annual picnic. Allegedly, shortly before departing Chicago, passengers on the ship's deck moved en masse over to the side of the steamer facing the pier so they could wave good bye to their family and friends. The sudden shift in weight over to the pier side caused the steamer to roll over on its side (often erroneously described as sinking but, in fact, it turtled over on its side) trapping hundreds below. 844 passengers and crew members drowned to death. More people died on the SS Eastland than on the Titanic which gave way to the SS Eastland disaster being called the Titanic of the Great Lakes. Two of the postcards show the steamer clearly over on its side (not completely sunk beneath the water) with distraught onlookers trying to rescue those trapped below. ..... The third postcard shows the SS Eastland upright prior to that fateful day and it also shows the SS Eastland's Captain Harry Pederson. Pederson actually survived the disaster but was brought up on charges for it. He would later die in World War I.
