Description: Sophia (Sophie) Wall Onton (Am., 1907-1987) Item: 'Town Square' scene by Sophie Onton (1907-1987) on gray paper, hand signed by the artist. Onton is a listed artist -- see Askart. I've seen similar works by her selling as charcoal drawings and as gouaches. This piece doesn't smear when I touch it, and while I do see stains from ink or paint on the back of the paper, I'm being conservative and offering this as a monoprint. Either way, it's a nice piece of graphic art and the artist won professional awards for similar pieces. Unframed and ships rolled in a tube. Markings: Signed in white paint by the artist lower right. Age: Unknown to me, but circa early 1960's in my opinion. Condition: Used condition. Old tape remnants upper and lower edges from being previous mounting, matting or framing. Ships rolled. Dimensions: Paper size: approx. 12 1/2 x 18 7/8 inches. Origin: Discovered in Pennsylvania, USA. Features: The scene is a curiosity to me as it seems like an exotic locale, perhaps in Asia?... Background: Sophia (Sophie) Wall Onton (Am., 1907-1987). Artist active in New York, Florida and New Jersey. Sophie’s husband was Richard Onton (see 1940 Census). Florida period: Onton worked in FL where she was commissioned to paint murals and pictures for interior decorating firms. Her work was exhibited in the Florida circuit pre 1958.
