Hisunusual talents have since inspired thousands. He has directed themusic for gigantic youth services such as one sponsored by the TexasBaptist Convention with 15,000 attending; another sponsored by theSouthern Baptist Convention attended by 20,000 and the Akron (Ohio)Rubber Bowl Crusade with 40,000 in attendance. On each of theseoccasions Billy Graham was the speaker. He directed the music forthe Texas Training Union Convention in 1954 and the Baptist WorldMission Conference at Fort Worth in 1955 and has been chosenas Music Director for the first Nation-Wide Evangelistic Conferenceto be held in Dallas, Texas, in July, 1963. He has led city-wide evan-gelistic campaigns in many of the major cities of the United States.ALSO A COMPOSERIt was in 1948, while conducting music for a revival in South Texas,that Dick Baker felt the inspiration to write a song. Following oneof the evening services, Dick returned to his hotel room only to findthat he could not sleep. During these moments of restlessness, a per-sistent thought lodged in his mind — "I have a longing in my heartfor Jesus/7 Shortly after midnight, in the darkness of his room, camethe words and music to the first stanza and chorus of a song thatwas later to become the theme of Youth Revivals throughout the nation.The song was entitled "LONGING FOR JESUS." It was Dick Baker7sfirst and most famous composition. It has since been translated intomany foreign languages, recorded, and published. "Longing for Jesus"has blessed and enriched countless lives since that lonely, sleeplessnight in 1948 and is included in this album along with another ofDick's well known compositions, "So Many Valleys." The other tenselections Dick has chosen for this album are those which he is con-stantly requested to sing in his many appearances. It has long beenhis fondest desire to record these songs JUST FOR YOU — his manyfriends.WORDS ABOUT DICKHe was born in 1927 at Farmersville, Texas. Upon finishing highschool there, he entered Baylor University at Waco, Texas. While atBaylor, Dick was chosen for "Who's Who in American Universitiesand Colleges," was elected president of his class, teamed with FrankBoggs to write the Baylor Fight Song, and founded the Baylor Univer-sity Religious Hour Choir, which has come to be an integral part ofthe school's religious life. During his college days he was namedTexas State Music Director for the Baptist Student Union for twosuccessive years. Dick was graduated from Baylor in 1950, havingstudied in the fields of English, music and radio. He then attendedSouthwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth where hewas graduated in 1953 with a Sacred Music degree. Additional studyhas been done at the University of California, and at San DiegoState College where he studied under Robert Shaw in 1954.For the past several years Dick, teamed with his brother, Bo Baker,has devoted his full time in the field of evangelism. This ministryhas taken them into the largest churches in the United States andto Mission Fields in foreign countries with a future itinerary includingcrusades in South America, Central America and a return to the Orient.Dick and his lovely and talented wife, Ann, live in Denton, Texas,and are the parents of two children, Paul and Lori.In composition and business circles he is known as Richard Baker,but to countless thousands he is called, "Dick Baker, Singer of SacredSongs."
