Description: We are the publisher, The Critical Thinking Co. and this is a brand new book in the latest edition. DescriptionA 144-page award-winning book for grades 5 and up to investigate fun, engaging crime mystery puzzles! Students are actively engaged in this high interest simulation as they gather and analyze witness statements as well as forensic evidence to determine who is behind the deaths of two people, and who is making counterfeit money. Students will first learn about different types of forensic evidence such as fingerprints, ballistics, handwriting, and more. Using witness statements, police reports and forensic evidence lab reports, students must apply their critical thinking skills and forensic knowledge to solve this case. As with any investigation, students will need to make inferences and deal with the reality that not all loose ends can be tied up.Students, working in small teams, are initially given a police report along with two maps of the crime scene. It will be up to them to determine the path that they want to take as they work through the investigation. Will they ask to see a specific witness statement? If so, they will need to determine which information from the statement will be helpful to the investigation. Does the information lead them to another clue? Could the witness really be a suspect? Does this person have an alibi? Perhaps they will ask to see a preliminary forensic report, such as a ballistics, fingerprint, or handwriting. These preliminary reports require students to use their forensic knowledge to analyze the information in the report, draw conclusions based on the content in the preliminary report, and record their findings in a final lab report. Their conclusions on the final reports will point them in the direction of the guilty parties. The format of this simulation gives students the power to determine the course of action their investigation takes. As the investigation unfolds, and they determine what specific information they need, they will contact their sergeant (teacher) who will provide them with the requested materials. As with any investigation, students will need to make inferences and deal with the reality that not all loose ends are resolved. They will form conclusions based on witness statements, forensic reports, and other information revealed throughout the case.If during the simulation the teams’ investigations come to a standstill, you may need to prompt them. For example, if they don’t know how to determine who the bones found at the shallow grave belong to, you might ask them what would happen in real life. Investigators would probably look to see if anyone has been reported missing. At that time, you could give the teams the Missing Persons report.Awards The Old Schoolhouse Magazine - Homeschool Blue Ribbon Award for Favorite Middle School ProductTillywig Brain Child Award, 2018--------------------------------------- Written by Karen K.
