Description: Something of Value by Rawland Storm The poems within my book have been accumulating over a span of sixty-six years. Perhaps the thoughts, words and feelings were not immediately stored anywhere, except my mind and heart, but eventually they were written down on paper, so I would not forget them. Through these poems I have, hopefully, managed to express the Christian feelings and beliefs I have always felt should be shared with others. As I have often said to myself, “Words are just words, until they are heard or read by someone else.” I have always written and posted my poems on-line, with only black letters on a white background. No colors, pictures or music to distract the reader; or affect their reaction to my words. I grew-up listening to the lyrics of songs, before music videos began to influence our feelings and thoughts about the words being sung. I liked my mental images much better. I still do. I just want the reader of my words to supply/apply some of their own thoughts, feelings, and images; and in doing so, make each poem their own. Excerpt from Book The Womb with a View ( One of five short stories ) Why Marys skin had no pigment in it, was never known, but it offered to the medicalprofessional the chance to observe first-hand the miraculous workings of the humanbody; things that could only be figured-out through autopsies and the examination ofdead bodies. Some biological activities can be discovered during operations, but onlyfor limited time-periods, and never for a long enough time to suit those interested intruly understanding how a human body works. Marys skin was as clear as glass; just like those of glass fish you see occasionally inaquariums. Fortunately, for Mary, only parts of her body were that way; parts thatshe could cover conveniently with clothing. Her face, arms, hands, legs, and feet wereof normal coloring. It was primarily her torso that was clear enough to reveal all thatwent-on inside. Despite her obvious peculiarity, she had been able to lead a somewhat normal life, duemainly to her parents most conscientiously guarding her privacy, all her life. Otherthan her parents, only her family physician had the chance to see Mary in person andup close. Over the years he had been allowed to take pictures, and even videos, ofMarys insides, but he always managed to conceal both his and Marys true identity, whenever he made his findings public. Marys social life was quite limited by her condition. All through high school she hadto be excused from any physical education classes because she was not allowed touse a public shower, where others might see, but not understand, her body. and whensummer came she had to be especially careful that the sun did not penetrate into herbody through her clear skin. Internal organs were not made to withstand the heat, orthe solar radiation. Without the protection of normal layers of skin, Mary would diedue to overheating, or damage from the sun. One summer though, Mary did meet someone; someone who understood her problemand who would not reveal it to anyone else. His name was Joe, Marys doctors son. Hehad been going away to school for the last seven years and had occasionally come incontact with Mary at his fathers office. They never really had the time to get to knoweach other very well, due to Joes schooling and Marys desire for privacy, but everytime their eyes met they never immediately looked away. Something of Value(Title Poem)Something of valueSomething of worthfrom conception to deathI pray my life is, on Earth; A life that was worth living; That touched anothers heart; That caressed anothers soul--Each and every part; A life not just something owned;Nor merely possessed; But shared with anotherSo we both feel blessed.
