Description: I'm pleased to offer this very attractive and classic specimen of Smithsonite replacing Dolomite with Smithsonite from the Philadelphia mine, Rush, Marion County, Arkansas. The specimen measures 1.84 x 1.25 x .88 inches or 4.67 x 3.17 x 2.22cm and is in excellent condition. This is from the John Weber (1926-2015) collection of Phoenix, Arizona and is accompanied by a former label of unknown origin. The specimen shows a few larger saddle-shaped dolomite crystals largely replaced by colorful cadmium-rich smithsonite. Small rice-grain crystals of smithsonite are scattered across the surface. These have long been American classics and these have always been highly sought after and much-coveted. This piece is in excellent condition though there is a white 1mm ding on one of the crystals that can be seen as a very small white spot--this shows the color of the underlying dolomite. The Philadelphia and Monte Cristo mines are perhaps the best known localities for these classic replacements though perhaps a dozen or so mines historically were worked for zinc in the district. When these were found as botryoidal specimens, the miners typically referred to this material as "turkey fat" because they literally resembled in color and form turkey fat. The smithsonite has partly replaced the dolomite and there are countless tiny "rice-grain" smithsonite crystals scattered across a shallow vug lined with microcrystalline quartz--these are exceptional under magnification. I have always loved these specimens and have only had three of us over the many years of collecting and dealing specimens. Savvy Arkansas collectors aren't too keen about these specimens leaving the state boundaries! Please check my feedback and my other eBay items. All specimens are carefully wrapped, come with complete and accurate labels and are quickly shipped. As always, your complete satisfaction is unconditionally guaranteed and I even offer FREE return shipping on any item that fails to satisfy for any reason---you can't go wrong. I'm reminded of the firm pledge printed on the old Foote Mineral Company mineral catalogs from more than a century ago, "Quality of specimens is assured as we permit return of specimens at our expense." Thanks for looking! I buy collections! Please contact me if you have a collection for sale or know of one that is available. I will pay a finder's fee to anyone that can point me to an eventual purchase!
