SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL FLINT Drawing ~ FLAMENCO STUDY ~ c1930s Original SIGNED

Description: An original graphite drawing study from British artist Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969). It depicts Spanish gitana performing palmas, the time keeping hand percussion of early twentieth century Flamenco, likely a study for one of Flint's major flamenco themed paintings. It is housed in a good French mat and gold leaf frame. The image measures 6 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches, including mat & frame, the dimensions are 17 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Drawing is signed in pencil in the lower left corner, the outer mat is also labeled with the artist's name, the inner mat is a good older handmade French style mat. Paper shows mild age toning, frame shows a bit of minor scuffing and corner chips otherwise all is in excellent condition. Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) was a painter known primarily for his watercolors of women, as well as for his work in oils, tempura, and printmaking. He was born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Institution in Edinburgh before serving an apprenticeship as a lithographic artist. At the turn of the century he moved to London where he continued to study art, and worked for The Illustrated London News. He served in the Navy during the First World War, and afterwards established himself as a painter of landscapes and figures, specialising in watercolor. Sir William Russell Flint was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Paintings in Watercolours in 1914 and a full Member in 1917, and served as President from 1936 to 1956. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1924, became a full Member in 1933, and in 1962 he was honored with an exhibition of his work in the Diploma Gallery.
