Description: One of the most creatively designed & decorative horse racing trophies you are likely to find! This stunning trophy features two large & beautifully crafted sterling silver fighting cocks in fighting mode stood upon a large, heavy oblong ebonised wooden plinth. The presentation inscription engraved on the unmarked silver plaque attached to the plinth reads: "The Northern Goldsmiths Sweepstakes 1975. Owner - Guy Reed. Winner - "Aviator". Trainer - Sam Hall." PROVENANCE: Recently a large collection of items from the large country estate & stud, Copgrove Hall, Burton Leonard, Yorkshire, the former home of racehorse owner, Guy Reed, was sold, including a number of important horse racing trophies won by this prominent owner. One of the trophies I managed to acquire was this trophy for sale. NOTE: The two silver fighting cocks are easily removed from the plinth for ease of cleaning & transport (see photos). When posting the trophy to the eventual buyer I will place each fighting cock in a separate box within the main box to ensure no damage is caused in transit. Both silver fighting cocks are fully hallmarked for sterling silver .925 with import marks & the date letter "S". The maker's mark is for Israel Freeman & Son Ltd. Combined sterling silver weight of both fighting cocks is 556.8 gm. Max Height: 190 mm. Each fighting cock is approx 200 mm long & 85 mm wide. Ebonised Wooden Plinth: Weight: 1.588 kg. Height: 120 mm. Dimensions of base: 375 mm x 160 mm. The Northern Goldsmiths Sweepstakes 1975: The race took place at Newcastle Races on Saturday 23rd August 1975 over a 1 mile course with 11 runners. The result was as follows: 1. Aviator (9/4 jt fav)2. Common Land (16/1)3. Yamadori (10/1) I am grateful to John Slusar for the above information. John runs the superb website "www.greyhoundderby.com" which provides a detailed history of racecourses worldwide, many now sadly defunct. If you visit the site & look at the Newcastle Racecourse page you will see the trophy for sale illustrated. Summary: Imagine this stunning horse racing trophy in your trophy cabinet or study! Good luck! NOTE: Due to the size & weight of the package I will post using ParcelForce 48. I am happy to post worldwide but I can only do so through the Global Shipping Programme & I cannot post personally.
