Description: ~ Signed "Willy Ley" Signed ~ THE CONQUEST OF SPACE by Chesley Bonestell and Willy Ley. Viking (1949), Sixth printing 1951. Hardcover in dust jacket An odd book in that the illustrator get's first billing over the author, but this is because the artist and his artwork are the primary focus of the book's text, as Willy Ley explains in his glowing introduction. Chesley Bonestell is widely regarded as "the Dean of Space Art" and his work can be found in science books, magazines, science fiction book covers, the Griffith Planetarium, and the Smithsonian institution. Willy Ley (whose collegiate education was in Biology) was a well-respected rocket expert long before rocketry was cool, barely making his way to the USA before the Nazi's took interest in his work. Originally published in 1949, this is the 6th printing (1951), signed "Willy Ley" on the title page in his characteristic sine-wave scrawl. The dustjacket has a few small chips and short tears but otherwise it's in good condition and wrapped in Brodart mylar.
