WASHINGTON, April 13, 1970— Merriman Smith, the chief White House correspondent for United Press International, was found dead this evening at his home. He apparently had shot himself in the head. Mr. Smith was 57 years old and had covered six Presidents over a span of nearly 30 years. Ac the senior White House re porter, it was “Smitty,” as he was known by Presidents as well as colleagues, who usually ended Presidential news confer ences with the words “Thank you. Mr. President.” The high point of Mr. Smith's career came in 1964, when he won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. For his dispatches after the assassination, Mr. Smith brought to bear not only his speed in writing, which he had cultivated in his many years as a wire service reporter, but also his intimate knowledge of the President and the Presi dency.
