Description: UNTITLED [ PORTRAIT OF CHINESE MOTHER AND CHILD ] SIGNED ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY CHINESE / AMERICAN ARTIST WAHSO CHAN (1911-1937) This charming painting, of a mother and child holding on to a boat oar, is by the Chinese American artist Wa Hso Chan (Chinese name) known as Wahso Chan. The paining is signed by the artist in the upper left corner: W. H. Chan. Wahso Chan was well known for his portrait paintings he made of the people in San Francisco's Chinatown. This painting is an exceptional example of the artist work. The medium is oil on canvas measuring 24 x 17 7/8 inches in size. Date created is unknown, circa 1935-1937. The painting comes unframed. CONDITION: The painting is in very fine original condition, with no evidence of any damage to the image. Wahso Chan, was born in Canton, China in 1911, Chan came to California with his family in 1912. He earned a teaching degree from UC Berkeley and further studied at the CSFA in 1929-32. During the Depression he worked as a recreation leader for the WPA. He was just beginning to do some of his finest painting when he was crushed to death between two trucks in San Francisco's Chinatown on June 27, 1937.
