Description: Beautiful Signed Vintage Rare “Hand-Built Pit-Fired” Raku Pottery Bear Sculpture Statue Figure Figurine By Retired Pacific Northwest Sculptor-Turned-Painter-Illustrator Jan Hurd, Zoom In Or Click On Pictures And Please Read Our Detailed Item Description Below, Please View Or Search Our Other Items Here, Combine Items” To Save On Shipping This auction is for what we believe to be a seemingly scarce vintage raku pottery bear sculpture statue figurine by Jan Hurd. It is signed JAN HURD on its belly. The bear is beautifully executed, being “hand-built pit-fired” as Jan put it making it a one-of-a-kind. The bear measures roughly 9 1/2” in length, 4 1/2” wide, and 5 5/8” in height at its furthest points and weighs roughly 2 lbs 1 oz. The bear appears to be free of any chips, cracks, or repairs. The bear does have some scratches, manufacturing imperfections, worn and/or faded areas, and general wear (see pictures). Jan no longer works in clay so finding pieces like this is getting to be more and more difficult. As she put it, “Eventually, after more than 30 years, the difficult handwork and smokey raku and pit firings took a physical toll and I knew it was time to retire.” She transitioned back to her roots drawing and still creates wonderful paintings and prints, well worth a check online where you can see a pair of her “retired” pit-fired bears on her about page. This vintage pit-fired raku pottery bear sculpture statue figure figurine signed by Jan Hurd is sure to be a nice addition to your collection.
