Benjamin was born on January 3, 1839 at New York City, NY. He graduated 12th in his class from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1861, and was commissioned into the 2nd Light Artillery. He was the brother-in-law of Medal of Honor recipient Abraham Arnold, a classmate at West Point who graduated in 1859. Benjamin received the following promotions: 1st Lt., May 15, 1861; Captain, June 13, 1864; Major by Brevet, Aug. 1, 1864; Lt. Colonel by Brevet, March 13, 1865. Benjamin received his Brevet Major commission for good conduct and gallant service in the battle of Spottsylvania, VA and his brevet Lt. Colonel commission for good conduct and gallant services during the Rebellion. He was awarded his Medal of Honor on June 11, 1877 for particularly distinctive services as an artillery officer from Bull Run, VA to Spottsylvania, VA May 1864. Benjamin had subsequent service in the U.S. Army, with a Regular Army rank of Major (Mar. 3, 1875), until his death at Governors Island, NY on May 15, 1886 (at the age of 47). He is buried at St. Philips Church Cemetery, Garrison, NY.
