Description: Beyond The Deep: The Deadly Descent Into The World's Most Treacherous Cave by William Stone and Barbara Am Ende with Monte Paulsen published by Warner Books 2002 first edition, first printing. SIGNED by Bill Stone. This signed edition would make a unique and thoughtful gift to a special technical caver, technical diver, or life support system engineer. The Huautla in Mexico is the deepest cave in the Western Hemisphere, possibly the world. Shafts reach skyscraper-depths, caverns are stadium-sized, and sudden floods can drown divers in an instant. With a two-decade obsession, William Stone and his 44-member team entered the sinkhole at Sotano de San Augustin. The first camp settled 2,328 feet below ground in a cavern where headlamps couldn't even illuminate the walls and ceiling. The second camp teetered precariously above an underground canyon where two subterranean rivers collided. But beyond that lay the unknown territory -- a flooded corridor that had blocked all previous comers, claimed a diver's life, and drove the rest of the team back. Except for William Stone and Barbara am Ende, who forged on for 18 more days, with no hope of rescue, to set the record for the deepest cave dive in the Western Hemisphere. A beautifully presented story of the dangers of cave exploring with a focus on The Huautla in Mexico. Hardcover, contains photo illustrations, maps, detailed index and footnotes. Beautifully done map end pages. 351 pages. Book is in Good+ condition with very little wear and very little shelf wear. Binding/spine makes some crackling noises when the book is opened from closed to flat on table indicating there may be an issue with the adhesive, but the book is easily handled and no pages are loose. Covers and pages are square, clean, bright, and unmarked except for author's signature on half title page. Dust jacket is in very good condition with little wear. Please see pictures as they are considered part of the condition description. I take numerous photos of the actual item and describe it as accurately as I can so you don't have to risk your buying decision on stock photos and generic condition descriptions. A portion of this sale goes to a food bank in honor of my father-in-law who ran a food bank. Many people experience hunger on a regular basis and they rely on food banks. Thank you for supporting them with your purchase. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED: If you are unhappy with any aspect of this transaction, please contact me immediately. I will work hard to keep buyers happy and to resolve the rare problem promptly. QUALITY PACKAGING: I care about your purchase! I package books and DVDs protected in plastic sleeves for water protection and wrapped carefully for safe and secure shipping. There are cheaper, easier, and faster ways to package items for shipping but the risk of damage during shipment is not worth it for you or me. I’m proud of the positive feedback I have received related to packaging. USPS MEDIA MAIL: I ship books and DVDs by USPS media mail. Media mail is generally reasonably fast, but can rarely take up to 8 days, so please be patient. Shipping outside of the U.S. is handled by the eBay Global Shipping program. I ship to the eBay international shipping clearing house in Kentucky and eBay takes it from there. eBay adds on the extra cost for international shipping and I have no control over that cost or how long it takes. eBay should give you a shipping estimate/total on the listing page for your particular order. POSITIVE FEEDBACK: If you believe you would be happy to purchase something from me again in the future, please consider leaving me positive feedback for this purchase as it really helps small eBay sellers like me. I leave feedback for buyers once they have posted feedback for me. Let's do this together! Enjoy!
