Ephraim Nicholson Winslow (1824-1880) worked for the Cape Cod Railroad, and for the Old Colony Railroad. Winslow started as a construction engineer, and rose through the ranks to become superintendent, treasurer, and a director. The letter is from a man named J. B. Tobey, of the Tremont Nail Company. Joshua Briggs Tobey (1807-1870) was the treasurer of the Tremont Nail Company. Tobey was a wealthy businessman who held many prominent positions, including President of the National Bank of Wareham; President of the Boston Screw Co.; and President of the Middleboro & Taunton Railroad, among many others. In his youth, Tobey attended Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts. Otherwise, he appears to have lived his entire life in Wareham, Massachusetts. His sons Gerard Curtis Tobey (1836-1911) and Horace Pratt Tobey (1838-1918) succeeded him as officers of the Tremont Nail Company. The Tremont Nail Company operated in Wareham from 1819 to 2006. The company currently operates in Mansfield, Massachusetts. It is the oldest manufacturer of steel cut nails in the United States. The letter is rather angry in tone, and begins as follows: Tremont Nail Co. West Wareham Aug. 25 1869 E. N. Winslow Esq. dear Sir, Although you never answer my letters, common civility requires me to answer yours. Yours of this day is rec'd. I notice the following words: outrage, quarrel, insult, indignity; I shall not reply to them. I can furnish words to meet them with propriety; but will not. Mr. Hoyt's information to you is of no consequence to me.... The letter is signed "Truly Yours, J. B. Tobey ". (there is an additional marking in his signature after his last name, which I cannot read; possibly it is "Esq ". PLEASE NOTE: the Find-A-Grave website has a Joshua B. Tobey page, which includes a signed photo of him. The signature on the photo is an excellent match for his signature on this letter. The letter is in good condition, with some general wear.
