It appears there are also the original protective papers between each tray, and/or a vintage paper towel. * Trays measure nearly 15” long, and nearly 11” wide, with raised edges. * Some normal wear and rub to the finish, but minimal, for the decades of journey these trays have traveled. * These trays will coordinate with most decor themes... A nice set of vintage trays. ===== The History In the 1950s and 1960s, women would entertain in their home. Sometimes it was a club meeting in the weekday afternoon or the evening. The ladies would meet for Sewing Club, and bring projects to sew or mend while they visited. Or perhaps Birthday Club, to celebrate the birthdays of the month. Or perhaps to play a game of cards, such as Bridge. The members of the group would take turns being the hostess, having the meeting at their home, and at the end of the meeting, would usually offer a light lunch to all in attendance. They served perhaps a sandwich, or a scoop of salad, or a piece of dessert, along with a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade or cold drink. Sometimes cardtables were used, with 4 seated around a table. Other times, guests sat in the living room or family room, and these trays were used (thus the term ‘lap tray’). Each guest would hold their tray while they had their lunch and beverage. In those days, women were in transition from being housewives at home the majority of the time, to starting to enter the workforce outside the home. The club meetings were an avenue for women to gather and socialize. Usually the family of the hostess would clear out from home while the hostess had club. I remember my Dad once taking us young kids to a movie, and then the A&W for a treat, while my Mom had club at our home. Another use for the trays was to dine in the living room or den, to watch a special show (this era was before VCRs, DVR, or streaming services, so no TV recording was available).
