Description: UAV "Orion" Year:2024Condition:UNCDenomination:10 dollarsMaterial:Copper-nickel alloyWeight, gr.:14.55Diameter, mm.:30Thickness, mm.:2Edge:Ribbed Orion UAV The Orion is a medium-altitude reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicle of Russian manufacture with a long flight duration of up to 24 hours. The UAV is equipped with equipment for electronic, radar and optical-electronic reconnaissance. It can be used for both civilian and military purposes. If necessary, four air-to-ground missiles or aerial bombs can be suspended on it to work on enemy targets. There is also an export version of the device - it is called the Orion-E. History of the creation of the Orion UAV At the beginning of the 21st century, military leaders of leading countries realized the need to adopt medium-altitude UAVs intended for both reconnaissance and work on targets behind enemy lines. Bright representatives of such devices are the Turkish drones of the Bayraktar model series, the development of which began in 2009. The military leadership of the Russian Federation did not ignore this trend and in 2011 issued an order for the creation of a medium-altitude UAV. The main developer was the Transas company, from which AO Kronstadt was later spun off - this group was subsequently engaged in the Orion. The design and manufacture of remotely controlled aircraft is one of the most important specializations of this company. At the stage of experimental design work, the equipment was called "Inohodets". Subsequently, the drone was named "Orion", which goes back to the name of Poseidon's son - Orion, a mighty hunter from ancient Greek mythology, whom Zeus turned into a constellation. The process of creating the drone took several years. Only in 2015 was a pilot model produced for flight and technical tests. In the same year, it was seen at the Ryazan Protasovo airbase, from which it possibly made its first flights. Official tests started in the first half of 2016 at the M.M. Gromov Flight Research Institute. Mass production was launched in 2019. And in April 2020, the first serial complex was accepted into service with the Russian Army. The company has been actively working to expand the sales market for the new UAV. In 2017, its export version, the Orion-E, was presented at the International Aviation and Space Salon (MAKS-2017). However, there has been no information yet about Kronshtadt concluding contracts for the supply of Orions abroad in an export modification. But this does not mean that the device is unpromising on the world market - it still has a long way to go.
