KEYWORDS: President, United States, Easton Library, John Tyler, 10th President, America, 1800s, 19th Century, Biography, History, First Americans, DESCRIPTION: From the Collector's Notes: John Tyler was the first Vice President to attain the Presidency as a result of his predecessor's death, William Henry Harrison having died in office only a month after his 1841 inauguration. And at the time Tyler, at fifty-one, was also the youngest man ever to become President.Considered merely an "acting President" by the Whigs in Congress, Tyler had to fight their attempts to limit his powers. He won the battle, and thus set a precedent for future similar successions. But within five months, as the in-fighting continued, Tyler's entire cabinet, except the Secretary of State, Daniel Webster, resigned. Nonetheless, thanks to his personal diplomacy and political skill, Tyler's administration scored many notable achievements. The first of these was the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, which settled a protracted dispute with England over the northern border of the United States. That year also saw the end of a long and bloody war with the Seminole Indians that eventually paved the way for Florida's statehood in 1845. And early in 1845 Tyler triumphantly signed the resolution authorizing the annexation of Texas, which became a state in December. Perhaps one of our most underrated Presidents, John Tyler was a cultured, charming, Virginia gentleman. After his first wife died in 1842 he remarried and at the end of his single term in office, retired to Virginia with his new wife, the former Julia Gardiner, one of the great belles of the century. Tyler was a cultured, charming, Virginia gentleman. After his first wife died in 1842 he remarried and at the end of his single term in office, retired to Virginia with his new wife, the former Julia Gardiner, one of the great belles of the century. Seager's biography admirably brings out Tyler's character and personality, deals entertainingly with his romance with Julia, and covers both families, the New York Gardiners as well as the Virginia Tylers. The book's title, of course, derives from the slogan - "Tippecanoe and Tyler too" - that helped Harrison, the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe - win the Presidency. As The Christian Science Monitor averred, "all this is done on a solid, scholarly foundation." The N. Y. Times described the book as "essentially the history of two important families, fascinating in its accurate minutiae." ********** This is the Easton Library of the Presidents reprint Seager's biography of the 10th President, originally published in 1963. For convenience, I have numbered these volumes based on the order of the Presidencies; numbers do not reflect the order in which the volumes were originally released. This copy includes the original collector's notes; the custom bookplate has been used and placed on the IFC. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear to covers, fading to the top edges of the leather covers, some faint wear and mild foxing to the all of the edge gilt. Spine slightly rolled. The interior appears clean and unmarked. Accompanying documentation displays some ageing around the edges. A solid VG copy. FROM THE BOOKSELLER: Thank you for visiting the Dactyl Books eBay Store!
