Scott Nellis (1945- ) American painter and printmaker Born on August 2, 1945 in Denver, Colorado, Scott Nellis’ interest in art has always been the dominant force in his life. He created his first oil painting at age 13, after being inspired by a cubist exhibition. The artist won awards in local art shows and first exhibited in the Denver Museum of Art at age 17. Since then he has exhibited in various local and national shows. Scott’s interest in printmaking began at the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1967 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1969. The artist explored the screen process extensively as a medium of creative expression and has continued to develop new forms and techniques in the process. While being influenced by many artists from surrealist Rene Magritte to American painter Thomas Hart Benton, Nellis has established his own style. He is known especially for his graphic landscapes which often take the form of a triptych. The prints involve large color gradations (blends) creating a dramatic effect of atmospheric light. The natural elements of the landscape have been simplified to essential linear forms which are composed to create a feeling of considerable depth. He works in a softer or painterly style in certain prints and oil paintings where the atmospheric quality is created with modeled forms and layers of shaded color. One of Nellis’ main interests in his work is “to create a sensual quality that connects man and nature”. Nellis’ work is in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada and Europe. A few collections: IBM, Denver Bank of America, California Exter Oil Co., Denver Kaiser Oil Co., Denver Aurthur Young & Co., Denver American Bell, Buffalo General Accident Insurance, Buffalo Payment: PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover accepted. *** eBay Collects and remits Sales Tax for all states that require Internet Sales Tax:: When shipping to an address in CO the applicable tax will be added to your total. Serigraph definition: A stencil method of printmaking in which an image is imposed on a screen of silk or other fine mesh, with blank areas coated with an impermeable substance, and ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. Also called silkscreen process and screen-printing. A serigraph is a print made by this method. The word Serigraph is a combination of two Greek words, seicos, meaning silk, and graphos, meaning writing. Silkscreen printing and other stencil-based printing methods are the oldest forms of printmaking. Printmaking is a process for producing editions (multiple originals) of artwork. Painting, on the other hand, is a process for producing a single original piece of artwork. In printmaking, each print in an edition is considered an original work of art, not a copy. Silkscreen printing can be traced as far back as 9000 BC, when stencils were used to decorate Egyptian tombs and Greek mosaics. From 221-618 AD stencils were used in China for production of images of Buddha. Japanese artists turned screen printing into a complex art by developing an intricate process wherein a piece of silk was stretched across a frame to serve as the carrier of hand cut stencils. Silkscreen printing found its way to the west in the 15th century. The original material used in screen printing was silk, hence the name Silkscreen printing. Today polyester is the fabric of choice.
