Description: H a p p y B i r t h d a y PAUL NEWMAN This stamp was commissioned by the USPS in time for the birthday of Paul Leonard Newman. Actor, director, race car driver, and philanthropist, Paul Leonard Newman was born on January 26, 1925, in Shaker Heights, OH. He enjoyed acting as a child, first appearing on stage at age seven as a court jester in Robin Hood. At age 10 he appeared with the Cleveland Play House. He briefly attended Ohio University before joining the Navy in WW II, serving as a radioman-gunner aboard the USS Bunker Hill. After the war he earned his bachelors in drama and economics from Kenyon College, he also attended the Yale Drama School for a year before going to New York to study under Lee Strasberg. He made his Broadway debut in 1953in "Picnic". He earned his first Academy Award nomination in 1958 for "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" which also starred Elizabeth Taylor. That same year he earned the Best Film award at the Canne Film Festival for his role in "The Long Heart Summer". Newman was a ten-time Oscar nominee. In 1986 he won the Best Actor Academy Award for "The Color of Money". He also won several national championships as a driver in the Sports Car Club of America in road racing. He was co-founder of NEWMAN'S OWN, a food company for which he donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity. As of May 2021, these donations have totaled over US$570 million. In 1988 he founded the SeriousFun Children's Network, a global family of summer camps and programs for children with a serious illness that has served 1.3 million children and family members since its inception. Newman was married twice and fathered six children. He was the husband of Oscar-winning actress Joanne Woodward.
