This artwork is based on a mock journal article page but with an eye-catching centre-piece diagram showing the awesome power of a Cumulonimbus thunderstorm, a meteorological wonder that vents the full fury of the restless atmosphere onto the hot and humid areas of our globe. They typically occur in the Tropics - but anywhere with temperate hot and humid conditions - where they unleash mighty hailstones, intense lightning, torrential rain and powerful gusts of wind from their downdrafts. The most impressive aspect of these storm clouds is their immense size - by far the biggest cloud in the meteorological scale - that stretches from the bottom of the Troposphere (the bottommost layer where most of the atmosphere's weather occurs) in the Boundary Layer at about 600m and reaching right through the troposphere to its very limits at the Tropopause (where the Troposphere begins to transition into the Stratosphere): 13-16,000 m. In fact, in the Tropics, some storms have been observed reaching as high as 18-19,000 m breaking the Tropopause barrier itself, important as it may inject chemicals and particulates into the Stratosphere.
