Paris, Gobert (text) & Tauernier (maps), 1618. Small in-8 – 11.5 x 17 cm. Contemporary vellum binding, mute smooth back. In a modern holster. 7 ff., 232 pp., 4 pl. First French edition from Schouten's popular account of his voyage with Jacob Le Maire in search of an alternative passage to the Strait of Magellan, which was translated into French, German, Latin and English less than a year after the first Dutch edition. Schouten's historic journey was just the third circumnavigation, “during which Cape Horn was discovered and rounded for the first time” (Hill). Copy decorated with 4 plates foldouts (of the usual 8): world map decorated with portraits of Magellan and Schouten, map of Cape Horn, engraving of Horn Island, map of the coast of New Guinea. During a trip, a former owner had the back of the case (20th century) stamped at the time of his passage at Cape Horn. Modest state : damaged binding with gaps and stains, angular gaps in paper on the first leaves without affecting the text, healthy marginal wetting along the length of the work, loose seams (inner hinge of the first cover almost detached from the text), old handwritten notes on the endpapers and title pages, small works of verse, of no great consequence but with a slight damage to the 2 maps and the engraving (but not to the world map). Rare copy (deserving of restoration) of the no less rare original French edition dated 1618.
