Dabrowski in ENGLISH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additional Information from Internet Encyclopedia The Dornier Do 23 was a German medium bomber of the 1930s. The earlier Do 11 had exhibited several problems, so two initiatives were launched to address those shortcomings. The first resulted in the Do 13. The second effort was a more extensive rework which resulted in the Do 23. With additional landing flaps at the rear of the wings several of the handling problems were corrected, but crew and military equipment were analogous to the Do 11 and performance was still considered mediocre. Between 1934 and 1935 282 Dornier Do 23s were built for the Luftwaffe of which 273 were assigned to the units. In 1936 the machines were replaced by the first versions of the Do 17 and were transferred to the training duties. During the war, some Do 23s were used as minesweepers, known as Minensuch literally, "mine-search" aircraft in German and fitted with a current-carrying degaussing ring under the airframe to create a magnetic field that triggered submerged naval mines. These aircraft were usually given an -"MS" suffix to designate them, as had been done with the similarly equipped Bv 138 MS or Ju 52MS aircraft. Experiments with spraying devices to blow off chemical warfare agents were also carried out with Do 23 with some aircraft used to fight pests. First aircraft received letters A, C, E and F which were designation of aircraft, not variants. The only production version was G. Do 23A: Aircraft WNr.231, registered as D-2485. Do 23C: Aircraft WNr.293, registered as D-AHYL. Do 23E: Aircraft WNr.294, registered as D-AGIR. Do 23F: Aircraft WNr.295, used for stress and vibration tests. Do 23G: Production version, manufactured in the Dornier main plants in Wismar and Friedrichshafen. Henschel and Blohm & Voss were also involved in the production with 24 aircraft each. Dabrowski turned out to be a surprisingly nice read. Published by Schiffer Publishing, it fits the publisher's contemporary formula of 48 page card stock cover books on German military equipment. Images throughout are all in black and white, and I must say, all of exceptional quality! This is a delight in a Schiffer title, as many of the tomes in this line up often suffer from a few "fuzzy" photos, this title does not. The text is translated from German, and reads very well in my opinion. Covering the Do F, Do 11, Do 13, and Do 23; the book is largely a photo essay of sorts regarding the earliest all out bomber and its development in post WWI Germany, as well as how this design laid the path for the bombers that Germany would produce and use in the later 1930s and into WWII. Exceptional cockpit and landing gear photos are present. While captions to the photos are somewhat sparse with words, seeing the images of this pre-war German bomber in such clarity make for a great experience. While not a popular aircraft, then or now, this title helps fill a void in aviation history. It's certainly not the ultimate source on this type, but for the price, you can't beat it. A great addition to any aviation library! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Online Book Review by This is another of Schiffer's photo essays covering military aircraft subjects. This is not an all encompassing super detailed treatise. It is however, an excellent source of "in action" photos and illustrations of an otherwise little known and poorly covered subject. The Do 23 was the first bomber procured by Hitler's resurgent Luftwaffe and, as such, it represented a worthy footnote in military aviation history. This somewhat slim volume - as are almost all of Schiffer's books in this line - does an excellent job of depicting this plane in all its various models from prototype to in service mainstays to variant models. For an aviation buff, a military buff, a history buff, and for a airplane modeler, this is an excellent resource to have at hand.
