Description: Here is a beautiful Edwin and Mary Scheier pottery studio decorated ceramic kiln shelf plaque. Edwin recycled his old broken kiln shelves by making them into art ! It depicts a double figure design in blistered matte green and brown, outlined in thick white glaze. It measures 18 inches tall, about 9 1/2 inches wide, 3/4 inches thick, and weighs 12 pounds. It is in great condition with no chips or repairs, just a short firing line at the back edge that doesn't go through and was most likely there when he decorated it. Unsigned, the back is covered with fuzzy contact paper and the blue is where the flocking has worn off. Mounted with heavy wire hanger. My guess is that it's from the NH period, but it's possible that it's from AZ. The Scheiers taught ceramics at the University of New Hampshire from the late 1930's through the late 1960's and were contemporaries of Gertrude and Otto Natzler, Beatrice Wood, and Maija Grotell. An excellent and unusual piece of mid-century modern ceramics.
