Spines: The spines are the main weakness of these books showing wear and much chipping (photo). The gilt lines and numbers are mostly visible. Three of the four titles labels are original and one is a replacement.Covers: The boards/covers are in good condition with a nice patina and only a couple of minor scuffs.Writing: The only writing is the owner's names on 3 of the title pages.End-papers: One of the eight paste-down end papers is a good replacement; the others are in generally good condition.Inside Pages: The photographs show the inside pages in order from volume 1 to 4. There is occasional, age-related pale browning in vols 1 & 2 (see photos) but this is markedly less so in volumes 3 & 4.Blemishes: There is a small corner missing on page 189/190 of vol 2. (last photo) These books have much of the the original, 300-year old look. The spines are stable but not in good shape. However, all the text blocks are firm, square and in good condition which makes them ideal candidates for new spines or possibly a complete re-bind.
