Description: An absolutely scarce and original 1913 Imperial Russian Lomonosov Porcelain Manufactory porcelain figure / figurine of a Lady With A Mask after Somov's first model that was produced in 1906. The color painted glaze over porcelain figurine is absolutely intact and in perfect condition. It measures 22.5cm / 8.86" tall, 16.5cm / 6.5" wide accross base and 14.5cm / 5.7" deep. The figure is marked under glaze with a Nicholas II IPM stamp mark dated 1913. Provenance: Historia Auktionshaus, March 2016, 130th Auction Sale, p.165, Lot #2281. The Lady With A Mask by Somov is one of the rarest porcelain figures / figurines produced by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory and one of the rarest Imperial Russian porcelain objects in general. A later 1924 piece realized a sale record of about $85,000 by Sotheby's several years ago. The first model of of this fine porcelain figurine was created in 1905 by Konstantin Andreevich Somov (1869-1939). Somov was one of the members of the World of Art association and produced for the factory the fairly small, exquisite, brightly painted figurines Lady with a Mask, Lovers and On the Rock. That association with its refined, aristocratic aesthetics that exalted the beautiful world of the theatre played a prominent role in cultural life at the beginning of the 20th century. Picturesque figurines of K.A. Somov made great success and at once became a rarity. Along with antique and precious works of art produced by the Faberge firm, objects produced by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory are some of the most sought after and most collectable.
