Description: SAY NOT THE STRUGGLE, JOHN HORSFALLPublished by Roundwood Press (1977) Kineton The Roundwood Press, 1977, first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, FINE/VG CONDITION ( dj price clipped & light dj edge wear ), 6 x 9, xix, 178 pages, illus, maps, appendices, index.-----------------This is an account of the experiences of an Irish infantry regiment in the battle of France. The story forms a prelude to the author's previous work "The Wild Geese Are Flighting", and is a companion volume. It involves many of the same characters who saw the 1940 battle through to the shambles of Dunkirk and continued in the later tale to its bitter ending in Africa. The present book describes a different kind of campaign, with unrelieved disaster the lot of our hard-pressed soldiers. As in "The Wild Geese" the story centres on the activities of a single company of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, the regiment itself being known through-out the army as "The Faughs", and this simple, brief account shows how personal and regimental pride will still persist despite all that fate can do. The tale begins in the peacetime background and continues with the Faughs' performance in retreat, in rearguard action and in violent defensive battle. It describes their initial experience and reactions, how they behaved when they encountered the enemy, and how they faced up to the ultimate catastrophe with their spirits hardening as the scene darkened about them.Fear and fatigue were usually there, but the ebullience of the Irish temperament, discipline and affection for the regiment, asserted themselves when the initial shock was over and, as the climax approached, were strong enough to bring personal triumph out of the mire of defeat. ----------------- The enemy's conduct is described, and here we see the full manifestation of the master race flushed with success. Here is their performance in close action, when the Faughs concluded that their opponents were possessed and suffering from mass hysteria. We meet Rommel's men for the first time in this context most of them out of control and well below the form that enshrined them in history afterwards. Side by side with the Royal Irish Fusiliers were a few heroic survivors from broken French regiments. There were also others who had given up the struggle, and this story records the eye witness account of their conduct the good, and the bad, together. At the end one is left with regret that the valiant French nation should have suffered a military regime so unworthy of its soldiers. **************************************************************************************************************** THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS.
