Description: Our National Centennial Jubilee. Orations, Addresses and Poems Delivered on the Fourth of July, 1876, in the Several States of the Union Author: SAUNDERS. Frederick (editor) Title: Our National Centennial Jubilee. Orations, Addresses and Poems Delivered on the Fourth of July, 1876, in the Several States of the Union Publication: New York: E.B. Treat & Co., 1877 Description: Hardcover. Small 4to. Terra cotta cloth over bevelled boards with Ornate gilt lettering and pictorial stamping and black rules and decorations. 872pp. Frontispiece, engraved title page. Very good. Binding just faintly edgeworn and text block sound and near fine, the only flaw being a delicate front inner hinge that's been discreetly, archivally strengthened; circular blind-embossed ownership imprint to front flyleaf. Nice first edition of this celebratory compilation of prose and poetry from numerous well-known figures of the day -- Frontispiece facsimile poem "Centennial Ode" "furnished expressly for this volume" by William Cullen Bryant, "National Hymn" by John Greenleaf Whittier, other contributions by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Lucius E. Chittenden, Robert G. Ingersoll, Nelson A. Miles, Horatio Seymour, Henry Ward Beecher, John A. Dix, Charles Francis Adams and many more. Tipped to inner flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Saunders, 1p, 5ΒΌ" X 8", New York, NY, 2 October 1894. Addressed to Charles Aldrich (1828-1908, Iowa curator, historian and journalist). Good only. Show-through from mounting stains on verso at top center and left margin. On letterhead of "The Astor Library," Saunders writes: "In response to your favor of the 28th Sept. I have much pleasure in sending the enclosed, according to your flattering request...." -- perhaps transmitting this volume? Saunders (1807-1902) was a muckraking British-born librarian, author and journalist attempted to work with the U.S. Congress to create copyright legislation to protect British authors from American pirates; rebuked, he became librarian of the renowned Astor Library (1859-96).
