Graduated from Nihon University College of Art, Department of Photography. After working at Nippon Design Center and Kawade Shobo Shinsha, he became independent in 1968. Since 1974, when he participated in the historic Japanese photography exhibition "New Japanese Photography" held at MoMA in the United States, he has exhibited at many exhibitions around the world. In 1992, he suffered a brain injury due to an accident, and died in 2012 after fighting the disease for 20 years. Aged 78. His representative work "Crow" is highly acclaimed worldwide as a monumental work of Japanese photography.
