Description: Here's a very special book. It's the handsomely-sized (8 inch by 6 inch) 1895 Macmillan & Co. edition of Fitzgerald's famous "translation" (there's a great episode of the BBC's "In Our Time" about this) of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. The interior is in excellent shape. If you're looking at this listing, however, it's the binding that you'll be interested in. This is a very very interesting Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding, the only examples of theirs I have been able to find that uses a "basketweave" stamping pattern. The fun doesn't stop there- the intricate parallel border stamping repeats the delicate gilt flowers, and the giltwork on both covers and spine is elaborate and perfect. The custom endpapers, which repeat the moon motif from the spine, are also used on the binder's custom slipcase. Raised bands, all edges gilt. I note a couple of very light spots of wear to the spine (see photos), but they are extremely minor. Contains armorial bookplate and nameplate of historian and author Herbert J. Mueller.
