Let me start by saying that I have a trachea tube. I wear a Shiley 6CFS. I have had a trach tube almost five years now. As a result, I know just about everything there is to know about living with a trach tube long term. I remember the early days when I would cough or sneeze and just blow all sorts of mucus and who knows what else all over anybody that was unlucky enough to be standing in front of me. I remember warning everybody that I came in contact with to not stand in front of me because I would probably blow mucus all over them. I also remember trying to take a shower. I certainly remember what it felt like to get water sprayed into my trach tube. Let me tell you. That is NOT something you look forward to. I tried the big old plastic collar thingy but that was just way too cumbersome to deal with. And unless you tried to choke yourself by wearing it way too tight, it would leak water past it anyway and you would still choke. I tried wrapping my neck with plastic wrap. I tried tape. I tried most anything I could think of. Sam's Cap solves all of those issues. Sam's Cap slips onto the 15mm round inner cannula and deflects anything coming out of the trach tube in the direction you decide. Up, down, left, right, or whatever angle works best for you. It also creates a waterproof seal with the inner cannula so it is a lot easier to shower now. Plus, with the small discharge hole, I can easily cap the hole in case I need to cough or sneeze. If you have worn a trachea tube for very long, you know how important it is to be able to cough and sneeze. Sam's Cap should work on any or all trachea tubes that present a 15mm round hub for the cap to slip onto. I will be adding other trach tubes to the list as I have time to research them but for now Sam's Cap works on the Shiley 4CFS, 6CFS,8CFS, and 10CFS trachea tubes. Sam's Cap should also fit onto many other Shiley trachea tubes and many trachea tubes made by other companies. All it needs is a 15mm round hub for the cap to slip onto. Cleaning is very simple with warm water and mild detergent. Sanitizing is simple by soaking the cap in a 50/50 solution of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and water for thirty minutes. Having one of these caps has given me enjoyment in taking a shower again, and I no longer worry about coughing mucus onto someone else. Great idea. Simple to use. Easy to keep clean. Should last a lifetime. Buy two so you have a backup. I have just found out that Covidien Shiley is upgrading the "CFS" style trach tubes to a new UN-R" style and will be discontinuing the "CFS" style trach tubes. As a stroke of luck, Sam's cap will fit the new series of UN-R style trach tubes with one new advantage. Now Sam's cap works well whether you wear the inner cannula or not. It will fit the trach tube with or without the inner cannula installed. Either way. Your choice.
