Salvatore Pinto (1905-1966) 20th Century Italian/Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Modernist best known for figure subjects Original hand signed limited edition etching on paper Titled The Repair Gang Hand pencil signed lower right-- see photos Pencil titled lower left--see photos Image: 9.5"x 7.75", Margins: 12"x 10" Looks good, in original "as found" untouched condition, minor age tone, minor light stains in margins, uneven margins, small crease lower left corner, stain and tape residue verso, unframed--please look at photos carefully. Great looking limited edition etching by Salvatore Pinto depicting an old industrial Philadelphia scene with the iconic City Hall tower in the background. This is a fine example of Pinto's work in good condition for its age and with a fantastic subject. My price of $399 is extremely reasonable and far below what one would be expected to pay for it in a gallery or at auction. Please check out the other artwork in our store on ebay. We regularly feature newly acquired artwork, from antique and vintage to contemporary and modern. Select the "See other items" tab on our page. Like us on Facebook @eastcoastartgallery Biography: Salvatore Pinto (1905–1966) was part of a Philadelphia-based family of artists that, along with his brothers Angelo and Biagio, Albert C. Barnes favored and collected. In a November 1932 article from the Philadelphia Bulletin, Barnes praised what he called “the Pintos’ most successful work,” noting how the strong compositions succeed even “when the picture is turned upside down.” Works of art by the three Pinto brothers are included in Barnes’ famous installation of his collection, now to open on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.Born in Salerno, Italy in 1905, Salvatore Pinto immigrated with his family to America in 1909. He attended the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and worked in many media including painting, printmaking, photography, theatrical and furniture design.Through his Foundation, Barnes awarded Pinto prizes to inspire his “modernism” through travels to Europe, Corsica, and Africa. In Europe in the early 1930s, Pinto absorbed the latest trends of the avant-garde, especially the radical experiments in color of Henri Matisse. Thanks to Barnes, Pinto met Matisse and studied with him in the South of France during Three Barnes Foundation Travelling Scholarships. Matisse’s images of the Mediterranean and the beaches of Nice inspired Pinto, who, upon his return to Philadelphia, developed a distinctly American repertoire of subjects, including a great series of paintings and prints inspired by the beach at Atlantic City and Long Beach Island.Pinto taught painting at the Barnes Foundation, and in this way—per Barnes’ plan—disseminated and instilled the ideas of European modernism to generations of American artists who were drawn to Barnes’ great collection and school. 100% Guaranteed to be as described.
