This is the book you need to get sales success on LinkedIn! Excerpt from Book What makes one individual interesting and engaging and another one less so? Your mind will decide this very easily and subconsciously when you are meeting people face to face: You may have found yourself scanning a room and identifying one or two people you would like to speak to and one or two you might want to avoid. That is you looking out at others. Now consider that they are performing the same filtering process when they look at you. Do you want to be on the list they want to engage with or the list of people they want to avoid? Self-explanatory really, but in order to attract people in we must think about how we appear attractive (I mean this in the business context: this isnt dating advice, but if you find it useful to think that way, then some very similar principals apply). Your profile on LinkedIn will help attract people in (especially when they are scanning through a group). It seems obvious then, that dedicating time to getting your profile right is extremely important. Thats why we are here at the start of the book, getting the fundamentals on LinkedIn absolutely right. Dont skip this chapter if you already have a profile (even a very good profile) as 99.5% of people we work with and review their profile find at least one thing new. The vast majority find a whole range of improvements we can make to give them (and now you) a great and engaging and effective profile. Ask yourself a few questions before we start: * What makes someone compelling to talk to at a networking event? * What do you look for in people when you go to an exhibition? * How do you choose who to speak to at the events you attend? Time to get stuck in and build a powerful and engaging profile! A great profile is by far the most significant part to your work on LinkedIn. In answering the three questions we posed, you started to think about how you build relationships and find connections in a face to face environment. With this in mind, you can build your profile and do all of the other things we describe throughout the book. If you havent got your profile as good as it can be, the other things we describe might not have as much impact as possible. The profile is an area to dedicate some time to, both as an initial piece of work and then ongoing, refreshing the information and keeping your profile bang up to date. Lets get this clear and straight. Your profile is your first impression, when I find you (and I will find you) online, what initial impression does your LinkedIn profile give me? NOTE: to edit your profile, simply hover over the profile option on the home menu on LinkedIn and two drop down menus appear. The first is "Edit Profile", simply click on this link. This will open your profile with a series of little blue pens next to each area you can edit. Lets start at the very top: Profile Photo Your photo - this is the part that will grab the attention of the "visual" people who find your profile, and LinkedIns own research (See below *) confirms the fact that your profile picture is key in your profile. It is the first thing that people will notice when they land on your profile page. All of the work we have done on LinkedIn points to the fact that people expect a good quality, business style picture. Now lets be clear - I am not the most photogenic person going, but I did choose to stack the odds in my favour. I invested a small amount of money in a professional photographer (Thanks Angela Carrington and Andy Ragsdale) and use a good quality image on my profile. Lets look at some of the alternatives to a professional photo: * A good quality photo taken by a friend. Get the best camera you can, get the friend who takes the best photos and spend some time on getting it right. * A cropped photo that you like. This can work if you have had some great photos taken in the past (recent past please not 20 years ago). * A nice holiday snap of you. A personal point, but the vast majority of people I speak to (80% upwards I would estimate) indicate that a holiday photo puts them off slightly. So if you are Richard Branson or Alan Sugar and you can afford to lose potential clients then yes by all means use a holiday photo. If you want to maximise your chances then lets leave this option. * A selfie. Really? Really? Just no. This isnt Facebook. A couple of other things to note about the photo: * A larger file size and quality will allow users to get a larger picture of you by clicking on the magnifying glass at the bottom right of your profile picture. * Think about the background and surroundings; we see the odd thing in the background that spoils an otherwise great photo. * Is black and white or colour best for you? (I alternate between both). * Keeping your photo up to date is a must. That photo of you in your youth might be great, but when people meet you in real life (20 years after the photo was taken) it can throw people Lots of people will notice your profile photo before they get to any of the carefully crafted words that you put on LinkedIn. Get a picture that people will notice, its as simple as that.
