The Cuban Poster Gallery is delighted to offer POLISARIO FRONT (F POLISARIO), an edgy original 1981 Cuban solidarity poster that was issued with folds so it could be inserted into (and distributed through) the Cuban magazine TRICONTINENTAL. This vintage poster salutes the 5th anniversary of the Sahrawi rebel national liberation movement that exists to end Moroccan presence in the Western Sahara. The United Nations has deemed the POLISARIO FRONT (full name: Popular Front for the Liberation of the Saguia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro), as the legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people. In December 2020, the administration of then-United States President Donald Trump announced it was recognizing Morocco's claims to the Western Sahara as part of an agreement under which Morocco would normalize its relations with Israel. This original offset poster was printed in 1981 by the Havana-based Organization of Solidarity of the People of Asia, Africa & Latin America (OSPAAAL), which for five decades promoted Cuba's solidarity with countries and revolutionary movements in the Third World. OSPAAAL closed its doors in Havana in June 2019, making its famed posters more difficult to find. A word about the folds in this poster. In the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, OSPAAAL posters were generally printed and distributed in two forms -- flat as well as folded so they could be inserted into the organization's magazine, which was printed in 4 languages and mailed from Havana to subscribers worldwide. The folded versions of these OSPAAAL posters have become extremely hard to find. Some collectors prefer them because, when framed with the folds clearly visible, they illustrate how during the Cold War the Cuban government used poster art to export its revolutionary viewpoints to its magazine subscribers around the world. Like many OSPAAAL graphics, some words in the F POLISARIO poster (in this case, the words "5th Anniversary") are offered in multiple languages -- English, Arabic, Spanish and French. The F POLISARIO can be found in prestigious poster collections worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The poster was designed by RAFAEL MORANTE, one of the most prominent Cuban graphic designers of the 1960s and 1970s. The poster (when unfolded and laid flat) measures approximately 20 x 30 inches (51 x 76 cm). Please note that many reproductions have been made of this -- and many -- OSPAAAL posters. The poster we are offering is an original. Overall condition of this poster is good with some imperfections, including foxing and tears in the areas of the folds. We believe this poster will display beautifully when framed. The folds will be obvious, of course, which is the reason some collectors prefer the folded versions of these Cold War-era relics on their walls.
